A Small Ship Because of the Multitudes - Mark 3:9

Mark wrote how Jesus, “the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea, And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.”, and in chapter three and verse nine of his book, Mark shares how Jesus asked for “a small ship … because of the multitude” where we read:

And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude,

lest they should throng him.

The verse reads, “And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, ... Mark began with the words, “and he spake” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “to his disciples” which means “to His students, pupils and attendants”, “that a small ship” which means “a little vessel or boat” “should wait on him” which means “adhere closely and attend to Jesus” “because of the multitude” or “on account of and since the crowd surrounded Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples to have a “little boat” ready for Him since the crowd grew so large.

The verse continues, lest they should throng him.” Mark added the words, “lest they should throng” which means “so that and in order that the multitude press hard upon, trouble, afflict and distress” “him” or “Jesus”. Mark shared the reason Jesus desired a ship was not only because the crowd was so large around Him, but also that they by their massiveness might “afflict and distress” Him.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus produced a solution for the large crowds who surrounded Him. Because there were so many people, they could have caused harm to He and His disciples by just attempting to be near Him. Jesus asked for a “little boat” which He could enter to avoid being “pressed upon” by the crowd. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who want to be close to Him shall find Him not only ready to “receive” them, but also able to attend to them in the best way possible regardless of how many others want to be alongside Him too.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
