Luke the physician wrote how Mary questioned the “angel Gabriel” who told her she would have a child as a virgin. He also told her that her cousin Elisabeth was also pregnant with a child in her old age. Afterward, Luke wrote “Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy”, and in chapter one and verse forty-five Luke shared how Elisabeth says, “blessed is she that believes” where we read:
And blessed is she that believed:
for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
The verse reads, “And blessed is she that believed:” Luke began with the words, “and blessed is she” or “and praised and celebrated is the woman, Mary” “that believed” which means “who thought to be true, was persuaded of, placed confidence in and trusted”. Luke shared how Elisabeth recognized how “Mary” was “celebrated and praised” because she “trusted” the word of “Gabriel”.
The verse goes on to say, “... for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.” Luke continued with the words, “for there shall be” which means “because, since and on account that there will exist” “a performance” or “a completing, perfecting, fulfillment and accomplishment” “of those things which were told her” which means “that the events which were uttered, declared and proclaimed to Mary” “from the Lord” or “which originated from the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how Elisabeth proclaimed how the “word” “from the Lord” spoken to Mary by “Gabriel” would come to pass.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Elisabeth not only “blessed” Mary, but recognized that because of her belief in “Gabriel's” words, she would know the “fulfillment” of what “Gabriel” said. God loves to confirm His word, and when people recognize His Son Jesus as “Lord” and submit their lives to Him, they “believe” like Mary and will receive God's desire to forgive them of their sins and receive everlasting life with Him.
Next time Luke shares how Mary said, “My soul does magnify the Lord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
