Mary Told About Elisabeth's Pregnancy - Luke 1:36

The Beloved Physician Luke shared how the “angel Gabriel” went to Mary and told her,you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God, and in chapter one and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared how the angel told Mary, “behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son” where we read:

And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age:

and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

The verse reads, “And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: Luke began with the words, “and behold” or “and look, lo and perceive”,“your cousin Elisabeth” which means “Mary's cousin whose name was Elisabeth which means oath of God”, “she has also conceived a son” or “Elisabeth is even so pregnant with a male child” “in her old age” which means “within her older years”. Luke shared how the “angel Gabriel” told Mary that her “cousin Elisabeth” was also “pregnant” even though she was an “older” woman.

The verse continues, “and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.” Luke added the words, “and this is the sixth month with her” which means “and the timing of Gabriel's announcement concerning Elisabeth was during her sixth month of her pregnancy”, “who was called barren” or “who bore the title and was saluted as a sterile woman”. Luke shared how “Gabriel” told Mary this was the “sixth month” of the pregnancy of her cousin Elisabeth who was previously known as a “sterile” woman who was unable to have a baby.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “angel Gabriel” informed Mary about her “cousin Elisabeth's” pregnancy. Even though Elisabeth was beyond the child bearing age, she was in her “sixth month” which defied all labels against her for not being able to bear children. God is in the miracle working business, and when Elisabeth became pregnant in her older age, and Mary became pregnant by the Holy Spirit, God demonstrated His power and ability to work among people. God desired to save people from their sins which separated them from having a relationship with Him. When Jesus was born, He became the “salvation” mankind needed to be able to relate to God. God wants everyone to yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they consider the “miracles” Jesus did with Elisabeth and Mary, they should realize He also desires to work a miracle within them so they can live with Him forever.

Next time Luke shares how the angel tells Mary, “with God nothing shall be impossible”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
