The Holy Ghost and Power Upon Mary - Luke 1:35

Luke the physician wrote how the “angel Gabriel” told Mary, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?, and in chapter one and verse thirty-five of His book Luke shares how the angel told Mary, “the Holy Ghost shall come upon you” where we read:

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.

The verse reads, “And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: Luke began with the words, “and the angel answered” or “the messenger and envoy from God responded and began to speak”“and said unto her” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to Mary”, “The Holy Ghost” or “the third person of the triune God who is coequal and coeternal with God the Father and the Son” “shall come upon you” which means “will appear unto you Mary”, “and the power of the Highest” or “and the strength, ability and resource” “shall overshadow you” which means “will envelope and cast a shade upon you Mary”. Luke shared how the “angel Gabriel” responded to Mary's questions by letter her know the “Holy Spirit of God” would come over her and give her the ability to have a child.

The verse goes on to say, “... therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.” Luke continued with the words, “therefore also” which means “for which cause, wherefore, consequently indeed and even so” “that holy thing” or “the pure, sacred, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated” “which shall be born of you” which means “who will be birthed by Mary” “shall be called” or “will be named, known and saluted as” “the Son of God” which means “the offspring and progeny of the Godhead bodily and trinity”. Luke shared how the child within Mary was to bear the “holy” child of God Almighty.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover more about the “child” Mary was to bear and birth. Jesus Christ would be “holy, without blame and pure” and known as “God's Son”. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Jesus was to be the “pure sacrifice” of God for the sins of mankind, and Mary was to bear and birth the answer to the world's sin problem within her womb. Those who are wise will recognize Him as the “pure, sacred and Holy One” that He is and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how the angel tells Mary, “behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
