Luke the beloved physician wrote how Mary was visited by the “angel Gabriel” who told her she would have a child who was to be the Lord. He also shared that her cousin Elisabeth was also pregnant in her old age. Luke continued to share that afterward, “Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name”, and in chapter one and verse fifty Luke shared how Mary continued her speech as she spoke of, “his mercy is on them that fear him” where we read:
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
The verse reads, “And his mercy is on them that fear him ...” Luke began with the words, “and his mercy” or “and God's kindness and goodwill towards the miserable and the afflicted” “is on them” which means “is upon people” “that fear him” or “ who are put to flight, are scared, struck with fear and seized with alarm, reverence, venerate and treat with deference or reverential obedience”. Luke shared how Mary referred to the “kindness and goodwill” of God toward people who reverence Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... from generation to generation.” Luke continued with the words, “from generation” which means “from a rank of descendants and successive members of a genealogy” “to generation” or “to a rank of descendants and successive members of a genealogy”. Luke shared how the “mercy” of God would be extended to perpetuity for every “generation”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we notice how Mary recognized the perpetual “mercy” of God that is extended to all who “reverence” Him. God desires to show His “goodness and kindness” to every person who will humble themselves and receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Every generation from the time of the birth of Jesus have the opportunity to accept God's free gift of “forgiveness” and “grace”, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him and reverence Him for the “merciful” God that He is.
Next time Luke shares how Mary says, “he has showed strength with his arm”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
