Luke the physician wrote how Joseph and Mary, “went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions”, and in chapter two and verse forty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “all that heard him were astonished at his understanding” where we read:
And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
The verse reads, “And all that heard him were astonished ...” Luke began with the words, “and all that heard him” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the teachers of the law of God who were given the faculty for hearing, perceiving, understanding and knowing what Jesus said” “were astonished” which means “were astounded, amazed and marveled”. Luke shared how those who “heard” Jesus within the temple were “amazed” by Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... at his understanding and answers.” Luke continued with the words, “at his understanding” which means “at Jesus' intelligence, perception and knowledge” “and answers” or “and replies and responses”. Luke shared how those who listened to Jesus were “amazed” because of His “knowledge” and “responses” to their teachings.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how people were impressed by Jesus within the temple. Though they must have thought they were there to teach Him, Jesus was actually instructing them. This Jesus, is the Son of God, the Creator of the Universe who had “all knowledge” according to the “truth”, and it was His Father God who was responsible for all the content of which these teachers were studying. No wonder He had such “knowledge” and “responses” to amaze. God's desire is for people to realize who He is, the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God, who has given the plan of “salvation” to mankind through His Son Jesus, and all who believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall be forgiven of their sins and inherit “everlasting life”.
Next time Luke shares how Mary asks Jesus, “why have you thus dealt with us?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
