Luke the physician wrote how Mary was visited by the “angel Gabriel” and was told she would have a child who was to be the Lord. Her cousin Elisabeth was also pregnant in her old age, and when Mary visited her, she blessed Mary for being the “mother of her Lord”. Luke shared how Mary responded to Elisabeth's blessing by saying, “My soul does magnify the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He has showed strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He has filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy. As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house”, and in chapter one and verse fifty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered” where we read:
Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
The verse reads, “Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered;” Luke began with the words, “Now Elisabeth's full time came” or “moreover and Elisabeth whose name means oath of God fulfilled and completed the time of pregnancy” “that she should be delivered” which means “that Elisabeth would bring forth, produce and give birth to her baby”. Luke shared how Elisabeth completed the gestation time and was ready to give birth to her child.
The verse continues, “and she brought forth a son.” Luke added the words, “and she brought forth” which means “and Elisabeth begot, birthed or engendered” “a son” or “a male child”. Luke shared how Elisabeth gave birth to a “son”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of Elisabeth completing her pregnancy period and giving birth to a “male” child. This fulfilled the promise of the “angel Gabriel” who told Zacharias (Elisabeth's husband) that he and his wife would have a “son”. God keeps His promises, and because the birth of this child was part of the plan of God to “save” mankind from their sins, this event had to come true. God desires to have a loving personal relationship with every person, and when they search the prophesies concerning the birth of Jesus, they will find that God was intentional in His acts to bring them “salvation” and “everlasting life”.
Next time Luke shares how, “her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy on her”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
