The Circumcision of Zacharias' Son - Luke 1:59

Luke the physician wrote how, “Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. And her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her, and in chapter one and verse fifty-nine of his book Luke shared, “on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child” where we read:

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child;

and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

The verse reads,And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child;” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence”, “that on the eighth day” which means “that on the eighth day after the child was born to Elisabeth” “they came to circumcise the child” or “Zacharias and Elisabeth arose and came forth to cut off the prepuce used of the well known rite by which not only the male children of the Israelites, on the eighth day after birth, but subsequently also proselytes of righteousness were consecrated to Jehovah and introduced into the number of his people, the son of Zacharias and Elisabeth”. Luke shared how Zacharias and Elisabeth brought their son to be “circumcised” on “the eighth day” after his birth.

The verse continues, “and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.” Luke added the words, “and they called him” which means “and the people who were circumcising the child named Zacharias and Elisabeth's son” “Zacharias” which means “remembered of Jehovah” “after the name” which means “which was the given name” “of his father” or “belonging to the child's progenitor and direct ancestor”. Luke shared how the people who were circumcising the child called him by his father's name – “Zacharias”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we understand the normal way people would name their first son after the father The people who were “circumcising” Zacharias and Elisabeth's son naturally would assume that the child was to be named after his father. We shall discover how they were incorrect in their assumption, and Zacharias and Elisabeth will let them know. God's plan for the salvation of mankind was purposeful and intentional, and even while Zacharias and Elisabeth were obedient to “circumcise” their son on the “eighth day” after his birth, they were being tested concerning his name. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person according to His way, and when people discover His way, the best response is to submit to Him and allow Him to do things the way He desires.

Next time Luke shares, “his mother answered and said, Not so”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
