His Name is John - Luke 1:63

Luke the physician share how Zacharias and Elisabeth were given a son by God, “And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of your kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called”, and in chapter one and verse sixty-three Luke shared how Zacharias asked for “a writing table”, and wrote, saying, His name is John” where we read:

And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all.

The verse reads, “And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John.” Luke began with the words, “and he asked for a writing table” or “and Zacharias craved, desired and requested a small writing tablet”, “and wrote, saying” which means “and delineated or formed in letters declaring and proclaiming”, “His name is John” or “the son of Zacharias and Elisabeth was to be called and surnamed” “John” which means “Jehovah is a gracious giver”. Luke shared how Zacharias requested a “writing tablet”, and he wrote down that his son was to be named “John”.

The verse continues, “And they marveled all.” Luke added the words, “and they marveled” which means “and the people who were circumcising Zacharias and Elisabeth's son admired and wondered” “all” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of them”. Luke shared how each and everyone of the people who were involved in the circumcision of Zacharias and Elisabeth's son “wondered” at Zacharias' written answer.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Zacharias was unable to communicate with his voice concerning the naming of his son “John”. Zacharias was forced to ask for a “writing table” upon which he “wrote” that his son's name was to be “John”. Zacharias was “mute” even as the “angel Gabriel” told him he would be, and yet, he was determined to obey what “Gabriel” told him about naming his son “John”. God had a plan for the “salvation” of mankind. This plan included naming the fore-runner of His Messiah “John” which means “Jehovah is a gracious giver”. Zacharias complied with “Gabriel's” instruction, and his son was named “John”. Those who are wise will consider all these details given by God so they might be saved, and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Zacharias', “mouth was opened immediately”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
