Luke the physician wrote how Mary was visited by the “angel Gabriel” and was told she would have a child who was to be the Lord. Her cousin Elisabeth was also pregnant in her old age, and she praised the “mother of her Lord”, Mary, to which Mary replied, “My soul does magnify the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He has showed strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts”, and in chapter one and verse fifty-two Luke shared how Mary says, “he has put down the mighty from their seats” where we read:
He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
The verse reads, “He has put down the mighty from their seats, ...” Luke began with the words, “he has put down the mighty” or “God has forced, thrown and cast down the potentate, courtier, high officer and royal minister of great authority” “from their seats” which means “from the mighty ones' chairs of state which have footstools and are assigned to kings with kingly power or royalty”. Luke shared how God “cast down” “officers and royal ministers” from their “kingly power”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and exalted them of low degree.” Luke continued with the words, “and exalted them” which means “lifted up on high and raised to dignity, honor and happiness the people” “of low degree” or “who were brought low with grief, depressed, humbled and deporting themselves abjectly while deferring servilely to others”. Luke shared how Mary said God “lifted up on high” people who were “humble and depressed”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see another affect God had upon people when Mary was to bear His Son Jesus. God “cast down” those who were powerful and in authority, and He “lifted up” people who were “depressed and humbled”. God loves people, and all the power and authority they receive in their lives has been bestowed upon them. When Jesus was to be born, all power and authority was to be His, and anyone who lived in a “humbled” state now had opportunity to receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words understand the “power and authority” of God and yield their lives to Hm.
Next time Luke shares how Mary says, “he has filled the hungry with good things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
