Luke the physician wrote how, “there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word: For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people. A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel”, and in chapter two and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared how, “Joseph and his mother marveled at those things” where we read:
And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him.
The verse reads, “And Joseph and his mother marveled ...” Luke began with the words, “and Joseph” or “and Jesus' earthly father whose name means let him add” “and his mother” which means “and Jesus' female direct progenitor and ancestor who was Mary” “marveled” or “wondered and admired” at this scene. Luke shared how Jesus' parents “wondered” and “admired” the following things.
The verse goes on to say, “... at those things which were spoken of him.” Luke continued with the words, “at those things” which means “toward the words and pronouncements” “which were spoken” or “that were uttered, declared and proclaimed” “of him” which means “about Jesus”. Luke shared how Joseph and Mary “wondered” at all the “words” which were said about their son Jesus.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Joseph and Mary were affected by the words which were “spoken” over their son Jesus. Jesus was to be the “Savior” of the world, and both Jews and Gentles would be benefited by His coming. God loves everybody, as John the apostle wrote, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” (See John 3:16-17) God wants every person to believe and trust in His Son Jesus, and because Joseph and Mary were obedient to the Lord, they not only heard the words “spoken” over Him, but also realized the fulfillment of all the prophesies concerning Him.
Next time Luke shares how, “Simeon blessed them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
