Simeon Comes to the Temple - Luke 2:27

Luke the physician wrote how, “there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke shared how Simeon, “came by the Spirit into the temple” where we read:

And he came by the Spirit into the temple:

and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

The verse reads, “And he came by the Spirit into the temple:” Luke began with the words, “and he came by the Spirit” or “and Simeon appeared and came forth through God's third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son” “into the temple” which means “in the sacred worship place located within Jerusalem”. Luke shared how “Simeon” was led by “God's Spirit” to the “sacred worship place” located in Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,” Luke continued with the words, “and when” which means “and a the time and moment” “the parents” or “the father and mother of Jesus” “brought in the child Jesus” which means “led and carried Jesus into the temple”, “to do for him after the custom” or “to perform for Jesus according to the usage and accustomed manner” “of the law” which means “pertaining to the command, precept and rule producing a state approved of God”. Luke shared how Jesus' “parents” carried Him into the “temple” in Jerusalem to perform “God's law” concerning the “firstborn” son.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover what seems to be a natural event for Joseph and Mary, however, God had a special surprise awaiting them when they entered the temple. We shall see how Jesus' parents and Simeon meet in our next verse, but for now let it suffice to know that God used this event to again confirm His Son. God wants every person to be in a relationship through His Son Jesus, and one by one He has employed different people such as “Simeon” to confirm to the world that Jesus the “Savior” is born.

Next time Luke shares how Simeon took Jesus, “up in his arms, and blessed God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
