Luke the physician wrote how Mary was visited by the “angel Gabriel” and was told she would have a child who was to be the Lord. She was told her cousin Elisabeth was also pregnant in her old age. After Elisabeth blessed Mary, “Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He has showed strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree”, and in chapter one and verse fifty-three Luke shared how Mary says, “he has filled the hungry with good things” where we read:
He has filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he has sent empty away.
The verse reads, “He has filled the hungry with good things;” Luke began with the words, “he has filled the hungry” or “God has satisfied those in want and need, who crave ardently, eagerly seek and desire” “with good things” which means “with useful, salutary, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy, excellent, distinguished, upright and honorable things”. Luke shared how Mary continued her “magnificat” by declaring how the Lord will “satisfy” people who are in “want and need” with “excellent and joyful” things.
The verse continues, “and the rich he has sent empty away.” Luke added the words, “and the rich” which means “and people who have abundance with outward possessions” “he has sent empty away” or “God has dispatched and dismissed without a gift the rich to be destitute of spiritual wealth and with no purpose”. Luke shared how God would “dismiss” those with “abundance” without “wealth and purpose”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Mary said God would “satisfy” people who have “desires and needs”, and He would “dismiss” those who have “abundant outward possessions”. God wants people to understand they would have “nothing” if it were not for Him even as King David wrote in Psalm chapter twenty-four and verse one, “The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” In other words, it's all His, and when Mary made her declaration concerning the “needy” and the “rich”, she credited God with the ability to do with His things anything He desires. Those who are wise will recognize all things belong to God, and when they humble themselves before Him and yield their lives to His Son Jesus, they begin to understand God's intention for those who are in “need” and those who are “rich” in themselves.
Next time Luke shares how Mary says, “he has helped his servant Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
