Mary Goes to the House of Zacharias - Luke 1:40

Luke the physician wrote how Mary questioned the “angel Gabriel” concerning her being pregnant with the Son of God with the following words, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” “Gabriel” “answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. And the angel departed from her. And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth, and in chapter one and verse forty of his book Luke shared how Mary, “entered into the house of Zacharias” where we read:

And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

The verse reads, “And entered into the house of Zacharias, ... Luke began with the words, “and entered into the house” or “came into the dwelling place and abode”“of Zacharias” which means “belonging to Zacharias whose name means remembered of Jehovah and was the father of John the Baptist”. Luke shared how Mary came into the “dwelling place of “Zacharias” and “Elisabeth”.

The verse continues, “... and saluted Elisabeth.” Luke added the words, “and saluted” which means “and greeted, wished well and received joyfully”, “Elisabeth” whose name means oath of God and was “the older cousin of Mary and the mother of John the Baptist”. Luke shared how Mary “greeted” “Elisabeth” after she entered her home.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see the meeting of these two family members and servants of the Most High God. Mary was to be the “mother” of God's Son Jesus, and Elisabeth was to be the mother of His “fore-runner”. Each of these women were willing “servants” to be used by God to bring forth His Messiah and Son Jesus into the world. The world was filled with people who were “sinners”, and in order for those people to have a personal relationship with God, they needed to be “forgiven” and “cleansed” of their sins. John the apostle wrote, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (See 1 John 1:9), and those who submit their lives to Jesus will receive the Christ and Messiah sent by God to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world.

Next time Luke shares, “when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
