Luke the physician wrote how Mary questioned the “angel Gabriel” concerning her being pregnant with the Son of God. She asked, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. And the angel departed from her. And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord”, and in chapter one and verse forty-six Luke shared how Elisabeth says, “blessed is she that believes” where we read:
And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord,
The verse reads, “And Mary said, ...” Luke began with the words, “and Mary” or “and Mary whose name means their rebellion” “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Luke shared how Mary began to respond to the words of Elisabeth.
The verse continues, “... My soul does magnify the Lord,” Luke added the words, “My soul” which means “Mary's seat of feelings, desires, affections and aversions” “does magnify” or “makes great, conspicuous, highly esteem, laudable and glorified” “the Lord” which means “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how Mary declared how all her “being” exalted the “Lord”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Mary began what is known as her “magnificat” as she “exalted” and “praised” the “Lord” because she was chosen to bear God's “child” and “Messiah”. The very core of Mary was affected by the message from “Gabriel”, and when her cousin “Elisabeth” confirmed the word by praising her, Mary gave glory to the “Lord” for her “blessing”. God desires all people to come to Him through His Son Jesus, and when they recognize this entire process was to provide a “Savior” to forgive their sins, they should yield their lives to Him and give Him praise even as Mary “magnified the Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Mary says, “my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
