Luke the physician wrote how Joseph and Mary, “went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover”, and in chapter two and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared what happened when Jesus, “was twelve years old” where we read:
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
The verse reads, “And when he was twelve years old, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “at the time and moment” “he was twelve years old” which means “that Jesus was twelve years of age”. Luke shared how Jesus was now “twelve years old” at this time in His story.
The verse continues, “... they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.” Luke added the words, “they went up” which means “Joseph, Mary and Jesus departed and ascended” “to Jerusalem” or “toward the city of Jerusalem which means set you at double peace” “after the custom” which means “through out and toward the manner prescribed by law, institute, prescription and rite” “of the feast” or “pertaining to the feast of the passover”. Luke shared how Joseph, Mary and Jesus went to “Jerusalem” to observe the “feast of the passover”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' parents took Him to “Jerusalem” to observe the “tradition” and “rule” regarding the “passover feast”. God desired to have His Son Jesus as the Messiah to follow all the “customs” and “laws” given to people of Israel. Each of these “customs, feasts and celebrations” pointed toward God's Messiah, and Jesus “fulfilled” each one of them as He was to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world. God desires every person to have a loving personal relationship with Him, and those who realize who Jesus is, God's paschal lamb, should yield their lives to Him and receive forgiveness for their sins and everlasting life with Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “tarried behind in Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
