The Mother of My Lord Visits - Luke 1:43

Luke the physician wrote how Mary questioned the “angel Gabriel” concerning her being pregnant with the Son of God. She asked, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. And the angel departed from her. And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, and in chapter one and verse forty-three Luke shared how Elisabeth asked, “whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” where we read:

And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

The verse reads,And whence is this to me, ... Luke began with the words, “and whence” or “and from what place, origin or source” “is this to me” which means “that this event is happening to Elisabeth herself”. Luke shared how Elisabeth was amazed that this “event” was happening to her.

The verse goes on to say, “... that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Luke continued with the words, “that the mother” which means “because the female ancestor and progenitor” “of my Lord” or “belonging to Elisabeth's One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “should come to me” which means “would appear and come forth unto Elisabeth herself”? Luke shared how Elisabeth wondered over the “blessing” she was extended by the “mother” of her “Lord” coming to her.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more of Elisabeth's reaction and response to Mary visiting her. Elisabeth realized this was the “Lord's” mother, and she burst out not only in praise of her, but also in wonder as to whom she was that “the Lord's” mother would come to visit her. Those who have a true encounter the Lord Jesus will be motivated not only to “praise” Him, but will also humble themselves because they were chosen to be the ones to whom He reveals Himself.

Next time Luke shares, “as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
