Mary to the Hill Country with Haste - Luke 1:39

Luke the physician wrote how the “angel Gabriel” told Mary she would,bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. And the angel departed from her, and in chapter one and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shares how Mary, “arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste” where we read:

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

The verse reads, “And Mary arose in those days, ... Luke began with the words, “and Mary” or “and Mary whose name means their rebellion”,“arose in those days” which means “raised and stood up during the time of she and Elisabeth's pregnancies”. Luke shared how Mary “stood up” during the time she and her cousin “Elisabeth” were pregnant with children.

The verse goes on to say, “... and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;” Luke continued with the words, “and went into the hill country with haste” which means “and journeyed, traveled and traversed into the mountainous, hilly and highlands in a hurry, with diligence and earnestness”, “into a city of Juda” or “into a dwelling place, abode and habitation belonging to Judah which means he shall be praised and was conjectured to be Hebron, which was a city assigned to the priests and located in the hill country, and the native place of John the Baptist according to Jewish tradition”. Luke shared how Mary traveled to the “mountainous” area with diligence which was located in a “dwelling place” where “Elisabeth” was living.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Mary responded to the news concerning her “cousin Elisabeth” by traveling to her dwelling place. God knew Mary would respond in this manner, and He led her to be with her older cousin. This was all part of His plan for providing the “salvation” of mankind. When people submit to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they have “traveled” to the destination He intended for their lives, and they will have their sins forgiven and receive “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Luke shares how Mary, “entered into the house of Zacharias”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
