The Oath Sworn to Abraham - Luke 1:73

Luke the physician wrote how “John's”, “father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost” after he was born, and he “prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he has visited and redeemed his people, And has raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began. That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us, to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant”, and in chapter one and verse seventy-three of his book Luke shared how Zacharias referred to, “the oath which he swore to our father Abraham” where we read:

The oath which he swore to our father Abraham,

The verse reads, “The oath which he swore ...” Luke began with the words, “the oath” or “the sacred pledge or promise” “which he swore” which means “that God affirmed, promised, witness and invoked”. Luke shared how God “promised” all these things.

The verse continues, “... to our father Abraham.” Luke added the words, “to our father” which means “to Zacharias and Israel's progenitor and ancestor” “Abraham” whose name means “father of a multitude” and was “the founder of the Jewish nation”. Luke shared how made His sacred “promise” to “Abraham” who was the “founder” of the nation of Israel.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover it was “God” who promised “Abraham” that He would deliver his people from all those who “hate” them, and God made a “covenant” with Abraham that He would be His “shield and exceeding great reward” (See Genesis 15:1).Through Zacharias' son and the Messiah God was going to fulfill His promise. God's desire is to “save” all people from their ultimate enemy who is Satan, and rather than submitting to the “evil one”, they are to yield their lives to Jesus Christ as their “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words carefully consider this “oath” of God and align themselves with His plan for the “salvation” of man.

Next time Luke shares how Zacharias says, “that he would grant unto us” to “serve him without fear”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
