Luke the physician wrote how Mary, “brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid”, and in chapter two and verse ten of his book Luke shares how the angel said,“fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings” where we read:
And the angel said unto them, Fear not:
for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
The verse reads, “And the angel said unto them, Fear not:” Luke began with the words, “and the angel” or “and the messenger or envoy of the Lord” “said unto them” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to the shepherds” “fear not” or “do not be afraid, filled with terror or alarmed”. Luke shared how the “angel” of God began to share with the shepherds by encouraging them not to “be afraid”.
The verse continues, “for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” Luke added the words, “for, behold” which means “because, since and on account the shepherds should look and consider” “I bring you good tidings” or “the angel was delivering to the shepherds good news and a glad announcement” “of great joy” which means “pertaining to massive and large delight and exceeding gladness”, “which shall be to all people” or “that will exist toward each, every, the whole and everyone who lives”. Luke shared how the angel told the shepherds he was delivering to them the “gospel” or “good news” that would be available to every person.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the message of the “angel” to the “shepherds”. The “angel” told the “shepherds” he was bringing them “good news” that would be toward every person who lives. God's Son Jesus was born, and He was the Messiah and Christ that would take away the sins of the world. Those who believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. That is “good tidings of great joy” spoken of by the “angel”, and all who are reading these words have the opportunity to yield their lives to the One who provided “good news” to all mankind.
Next time Luke shares how the angel says, “unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
