A Sword Piercing Mary's Soul - Luke 2:35

Luke the physician wrote how, “there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word: For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people. A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against”, and in chapter two and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Simeon told Mary, “a sword shall pierce through your own soul also” where we read:

(Yes, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also,)

that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

The verse reads, “(Yes, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also,)” Luke began with the words, “Yes, and a sword” or “even so and indeed a saber or long and broad cutlass” “shall pierce through” which means “will pass and be forced through” “your own soul also” or “Mary's own seat of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions”. Luke shared how Mary would also experience a “piercing” of her “soul” because of Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke continued with the words, “that the thoughts” which means “so the thinking, inward reasoning, purpose and design” “of many hearts” or “pertaining to a large and massive amount of thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors ” “may be revealed” which means “will be exposed, made known, laid open, disclosed and manifested”. Luke shared how Jesus would also be responsible for “exposing” the “thoughts and intents” of many people.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Mary was to be hurt within her “soul” concerning Jesus. When Jesus died upon the cross, this was fulfilled. Jesus was to “expose” the “thinking” within people's “hearts” which should drive them to Him for salvation. God's desire is to “save” every person, and the price Jesus paid by dying on the cross for their sins caused Mary great grief. Jesus died so people may believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who are wise will not only consider the price Jesus paid for their sins, but also the price “Mary” paid as she watched her Son die so they might be saved.

Next time Luke shares about, “Anna, a prophetess”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
