How Shall This Be? - Luke 1:34

Luke the physician wrote how the “angel Gabriel” told Mary, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end, and in chapter one and verse thirty-four of His book Luke shared how Mary asked, “How shall this be?” where we read:

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

The verse reads, “Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, ... Luke began with the words, “then said Mary” or “moreover and Mary uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned”“unto the angel” which means “to the messenger and envoy”, “how shall this be” or “in what manner will this happen or come to pass”? Luke shared how Mary responded to the “angel's” pronouncement with a question concerning the “way” what he said would happen.

The verse continues, “... seeing I know not a man?” Luke added the words, “seeing I know not” which means “because and since Mary has not had sexual intercourse with” “a man” or “a male human being”. Luke shared how Mary did not understand how she could be “pregnant” with a child because she had not had “sexual intercourse” with any “man”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we notice how Mary was not challenging the “angel's” message, but rather attempting to understand how this would happen. Mary was a “virgin” and did not have “sexual intercourse” with a man. She knew how babies were made, and this would be outside that knowledge. However, this was not outside of God's realm because He is “Creator” God who designed the “reproductive” system. God was to perform a miracle in Mary because His Son Jesus was to be “pure and undefiled” among men. God wants every person to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will realize the extent God has gone to have His “Savior” Son and Messiah be born through a “virgin” who was made to understand her role in God's everlasting Kingdom.

Next time Luke shares how the angel tells Mary, “the Holy Ghost shall come upon you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
