Luke the physician wrote how Mary was visited by the “angel Gabriel” and was told she would have a child who was to be the Lord. “Gabriel” also told her that “Elisabeth” her older cousin was also pregnant with a child. Afterward Luke shared how, “Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior”, and in chapter one and verse forty-eight of his book Luke shared how Mary said, “he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden” where we read:
For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:
for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
The verse reads, “For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:” Luke began with the words, “for he has regarded” or “because, since and on account that the Lord has turned his eyes upon, looked upon and had respect to” “the low estate” which means “the spiritual abasement and leading to perceive and lament the littleness and guilt” “of his handmaiden” or “of the Lord's female servant and bondmaid”. Luke shared how Mary continued her pontificate by noting the way God “turned his eyes upon” her even while she was “littleness” or “smallness” before others.
The verse continues, “for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” Luke added the words, “for, behold” which means “because, since and on account that, lo, look and see”, “from henceforth all generations” or “from this time on each, every, the whole and everyone of the several ranks of natural descendants and the successive members of genealogies ” “shall call me blessed” which means “will name and pronounce praise upon and esteem Mary as happy and beautiful”. Luke shared how Mary proclaimed that from this point on in her life unto perpetual “generations” people would consider her “blessed” of God.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Mary was very perceptive concerning the “blessings” from God. She knew God “looked upon” her, and even though she came from “meager means” and a “low estate”, God still chose her as the vessel through whom His Savior and Son Jesus would come. God loves people, and although they may deem themselves to be of “low estate” and wonder if He really sees them, we can be certain that He does and He has a plan and a purpose for their lives in His Kingdom. The best response to God's plan is to yield to His Son Jesus as a personal “Savior and Lord” and allow Him to determine what the outcome shall be from ages on end.
Next time Luke shares how Mary says, “he that is mighty has done to me great things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
