Luke the physician wrote how, “there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, ...”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how Simeon took up Jesus “into his arms, and blessed God” where we read:
Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
The verse reads, “Then took he him up in his arms, ...” Luke began with the words, “then took he him up” or “at that moment Simeon picked Jesus up” “in his arms” which means “within the enfolding of his physical arms”. Luke shared how Simeon picked up Jesus within his “arms”.
The verse continues, “... and blessed God, and said, ...” Luke added the words, “and blessed God” which means “and praised, celebrated and consecrated with solemn prayers the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words found within the next verse. Luke shared how Simeon “praised and celebrated” “God” by declaring his next words.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover what Simeon did when he saw Jesus. Simeon lifted Jesus up in his arms, “blessed” the Lord and continued to consult with God. Those who encounter the Messiah Jesus will be inclined to desire a closeness to Him, and they will lift their voices to “praise and celebrate” God in their gratefulness to have a personal relationship with Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Simeon says, “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
