Luke the physician wrote how, “there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word: For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people”, and in chapter two and verse thirty-two of his book Luke shared how Simeon continues by saying, “a light to lighten the Gentiles” where we read:
A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.
The verse reads, “A light to lighten the Gentiles, ...” Luke began with the words, “a light” or “a brightness, lamp and fire that makes manifest” “to lighten the Gentiles” which means “to disclose, reveal and manifest to the pagan, heathen and foreign nations who were not worshiping God”. Luke shared how God's “salvation” was prepared to “disclose” His “salvation” to the “foreign and unbelieving nations”.
The verse continues, “... and the glory of your people Israel.” Luke added the words, “and the glory” which means “and the honor, praise and dignity” “of your people Israel” or “belonging to God's tribe, nation and people of the same stock and language of Israel which means he shall be a prince of God”. Luke shared how God's “salvation” would also be the “praise and honor” of His “nation Israel”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was sent not only to “Israel”, but also to the “Gentile” nations. Jesus was born to be the “Savior” of “all people” regardless of whether they were Jews or Gentiles. God loves everyone, and when a person understands His plan to provide “salvation” from sins to each one, they should yield their lives to Him and submit to His plan to have them be with Him for all eternity.
Next time Luke shares how, “Joseph and his mother marveled at those things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
