What Shall We Do Then? - Luke 3:10

Luke the physician wrote how John said, “to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire”, and in chapter three and verse ten of his book Luke shared how the people asked John, “what shall we do then?” where we read:

And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

The verse reads, “And the people asked him, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and the people” or “and the crowd, collection of people or multitude” “asked him” which means “inquired, questioned and interrogated John”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and questioning”. Luke shared how the crowd of people “questioned” John concerning the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... What shall we do then?” Luke continued with the words, “what shall we do” which means “what are we the people to make ready, prepare and produce” “then” or “therefore, consequently and on account of this”? Luke shared how the “people” within the crowd listening to John wondered “how” they were to respond to what John was preaching.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how John's preaching incited a desire to “do” something about what he was saying. They did not just “hear” his words, but they wanted to “respond” to them. When God's word is goes forth in power such as it did with John, people will respond to it. Some may be angry, sad or even happy when they hear the words of God, but there is a desire to “do” something about them. God wants people to “respond” to Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they have “acted” in the way that aligns with His “good news”.

Next time Luke shares how John answered the people, “He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has meat, let him do likewise”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
