John the apostle wrote how, “there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he said unto him, Will you be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steps down before me. Jesus said unto him, Rise, take up your bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day:it is not lawful for you to carry your bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up your bed, and walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto you, Take up your bed, and walk?”, and in chapter five and verse thirteen of his book, John shared how the man, “did not know who it was” where we read:
And he that was healed did not know who it was:
for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
The verse reads, “And he that was healed did not know who it was:”. John began with the words, “and he that was healed” or “and the man that was cured and made whole of his thirty-eight year infirmity” “did not know who it was” which means “did not perceive, understand, discern or discover the person that cured him”. John shared how the man who was cured did not perceive who it was that made him whole.
The verse continues, “for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.” John added the words, “for Jesus” which means “because, since and on account that the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “had conveyed himself away” or “had taken himself away, escaped and slipped away secretly”, “a multitude” which means “a large and massive crowd of people” “being in that place” or “having come to that location”. John shared how “Jesus” “slipped away from the crowd of people” who were in that location.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how the man who was “cured” from his thirty-eight infirmity did not even know who “healed” him. Jesus was in “Jerusalem” at the feast time, and many people gathered there to join in the festival. Jesus made this man whole in the midst of this crowd, and afterward, He escaped so quickly that the man didn't know who cured him. God loves to work in ways that do not always bring attention to Him, and though His work is done in silence, He works as the “Savior and Lord” of the world. Every person who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Let all who read these words know Jesus is able to “cure” anything they encounter, especially the “spiritual” battle they face for all eternity.
Next time see John shares, “afterward Jesus found him in the temple”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
