John the apostle wrote how Jesus met a “Samaritan woman” at a well located near the Samaritan city of Sychar. As they conversed the woman said, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and you say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman said unto him, I know that Messiah comes, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-six of his book, John shared how Jesus told the woman, “I that speak unto you am he” where we read:
Jesus said unto her, I that speak unto you am he.
The verse reads, “Jesus said unto her, ...” John began with the words, “Jesus said” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto her” which means “to the Samaritan woman”. John shared how Jesus began to respond to the “Samaritan woman” again.
The verse goes on to say, “... I that speak unto you am he.”. John continued with the words, “I that speak unto you” which means “I, Jesus, who am uttering a tone and voice, articulating sounds and talking to you, Samaritan woman” “am he” or “exist as the Christ and Messiah”. John shared how Jesus told the “Samaritan woman” that He was the “Christ” sent from God.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus exposed His true identity to this “Samaritan woman”. She thought He was a prophet, and she knew when “Christ” came He would “tell” them “all things”. At this statement, Jesus told the woman who He was. We can imagine the look on her face when she realized the “Christ of God” was standing before her, revealing her sins, and yet receiving her to experience true change within her life. Jesus had the ability to look through the “sinfulness” of people and reassure them that they could be “redeemed and saved” from their “sinful” lives. Jesus continues to see through the deepest and darkest sins of people today, and He will forgive and grant them everlasting life with God when they simply believe in, trust in, rely upon and cling to Him. Let all who read these words recognize Jesus as the “Christ of God” and submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time John shares how Jesus' disciples, “marveled that he talked with the woman”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
