John the apostle wrote how Jesus told the “Samaritan woman” at the well, “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come here to draw. Jesus said unto her, Go, call your husband, and come here. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, you have well said, I have no husband. For you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband: in that said you truly”, and in chapter four and verse nineteen of his book, John shared how the woman told Jesus, “you are a prophet” where we read:
The woman said unto him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
The verse reads, “The woman said unto him, ...” John began with the words, “The woman” or “the female human from Samaria” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”. John shared how the “Samaritan woman” began to respond to Jesus' revelation about her.
The verse goes on to say, “... Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.”. John continued with the words, “Sir, I perceive” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah” “that you are a prophet” or “that you, Jesus, exist as one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman who solemnly declared to men what they have received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”. John shared how the “Samaritan woman” began to see Jesus as “a spokesman for God”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the “Samaritan woman” responded to Jesus exposing her marital relationships. Rather than say, “you're right”, she attempted to “label” Jesus as “a prophet”. Even though this is deflecting from admission of the truth, Jesus continued to relate to her. Jesus had a wonderful way of looking through the “sins and errors” of people and reaching into their soul to win them to Himself. Many attempt to “conceal” or “excuse” their sins, but Jesus is willing to “forgive” every sin a person has ever committed. Those who are wise will allow Jesus to “expose” their sins, forgive their sins and purify them from their sins.
Next time John shares how the woman says to Jesus, “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
