John the apostle wrote how Jesus told the “Samaritan woman” at the well, “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come here to draw. Jesus said unto her, Go, call your husband, and come here. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, you have well said, I have no husband”, and in chapter four and verse eighteen of his book, John shared how Jesus told the woman, “you have had five husbands” where we read:
For you have had five husbands;
and he whom you now have is not your husband: in that said you truly.
The verse reads, “For you have had five husbands;” John began with the words, “for you have had” or “because, since and on account that you, Samaritan woman, have possessed” “five husbands” which means “five male spouses”. John shared how Jesus exposed the fact that the “Samaritan woman” was married previously to five different men.
The verse continues, “and he whom you now have is not your husband: in that said you truly.”. John added the words, “and he whom you have now” which means “and the man who the Samaritan woman possessed at this particular time” “is not your husband” or “is in no way or manner your, the Samaritan woman's, male spouse”: “in that said you truly” which means “in this word and speech you, Samaritan woman, have spoken truthfully and not concealing”. John shared how Jesus told the “Samaritan woman” that He knew she was currently living with a man who was not her “husband”, and because of that, she was telling the “truth” about not having a “husband”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew exactly what was going on with this “Samaritan woman”. She told Him she did not have a “husband”, and she spoke the truth to Jesus. However, the reason she had no “husband” was because she was living with a man. She previously had “five husbands”, and she had not bothered to “marry” her current man. Jesus knew all these things, and He touched on them to bring her into a personal relationship with Him. He does the same with every person who “conceals” or attempts to “hide” things from Him, and when they admit the “truth”, He is able to offer them “salvation” and forgiveness of sins. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and He knows everything about everyone. He sent His Son Jesus to offer forgiveness of their sins regardless of how wrong they are or how many times they have committed them. Those who are wise will allow Him to expose their “sins” and then receive Him as the “Savior and Lord” of their life.
Next time John shares how the woman tells Jesus, “I perceive that you are a prophet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
