The apostle John wrote concerning Jesus that some religious leaders, “would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have you not brought him? The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man”, and in chapter seven and verse forty-seven of his book, John shared how the Pharisees asked, “are you also deceived?”, where we read:
Then answered them the Pharisees, Are you also deceived?
The verse reads, “Then answered them the Pharisees, ...” John began with the words, “then answered them” or “at that time responded and began to speak” “the Pharisees” which means “the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life”. John shared how the “Pharisees” began to respond to the “officers”.
The verse continues, “... Are you also deceived?” John added the words, “are you also” which means “do you officers even so and indeed exists as” “deceived” or “lead away from the truth, lead into error and to go astray”? John shared how the “religious leaders” asked the “officers” if they were “lead away from the truth and into error”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the “Pharisees” wanted to know if the “officers” were also “lead astray”. They thought the people who believed in Jesus were in “error”, and now their “arresting officers” were telling them no one “spoke” like Jesus. God sent His Son Jesus to be the “Savior” of the world, and every person who puts their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life. Those who are wise will not be “deceived” and will yield their life to Jesus.
Next time John shares how the Pharisees ask, “have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
