The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted there with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons”, and in chapter eighteen and verse four of his book John shared what Jesus did, “knowing all things that should come upon him” where we read:
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth,
and said unto them, Whom seek you?
The verse reads, “Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, ...” John began with the words, “Jesus therefore” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “knowing all things that should come upon him” or “perceiving, understanding, discerning and discovering each, every, the whole and everything that was to make it's appearance and show itself to him, Jesus”, “went forth” which means “arose” and did the following. John shared how Jesus “knew” what was about to happen, so He approached the crowd of soldiers, servants and officers and asked the following question.
The verse goes on to say, “...and said unto them, Whom seek you? ” John continued with the words, “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the crowd of soldiers, servants and officers, “Whom seek you” which means “what person are you, crowd of soldiers, servants and officers, looking for, aiming, craving and striving after”? John shared how Jesus asked the “crowd” who was coming for Him who they were looking for?
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was fully aware of all the things that were going to happen to Him. Though this crowd believed themselves to be carrying out their own plan to rid themselves of Jesus, they were actually fulfilling God's plan of salvation for mankind. Jesus understood the reason these people were coming, and He willingly allowed them to carry out their purpose. Jesus willingly came to die for the sins of the whole world, and anyone who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God.
Next time we see John shares how, “Jesus said unto them, I am he”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
