In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. Among many people he employed was, “Nehemiah” himself who was “the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Bethzur, unto the place over against the sepulchers of David, and to the pool that was made, and unto the house of the mighty. After him repaired the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani. Next unto him repaired Hashabiah, the ruler of the half part of Keilah, in his part. After him repaired their brethren, Bavai the son of Henadad, the ruler of the half part of Keilah. And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, another piece over against the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall”, and in chapter three and verse twenty of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “after him Baruch … repaired”, where we read,
After him Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece,
from the turning of the wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
The verse reads, “After him Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “after him Baruch” or “following him, Ezer, Baruch whose name means blessed” “the son of Zabbai” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Zabbai whose name means pure and was the head of a family of seven hundred and sixty exiles returning to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel” “earnestly repaired” or “strengthened, hardened and made firm with burning, hot, and kindled effort” “the other piece” which means “another section or portion”. Nehemiah shared how “Baruch” furiously made firm another section of the barrier wall surrounding Jerusalem.
The verse goes on to say, “... from the turning of the wall unto the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “from the turning of the wall” or “separate and apart from the place of the corner structure, buttress or post” “unto the door of the house” which means “toward the opening, entrance and gate belonging to the habitation, abode and dwelling place” “of Eliashib” or “belonging to Eliashib whose name means God restores”“the high priest” which means “the important, great and exceedingly noble spiritual spokesman and leader”. Nehemiah shared how “Baruch” worked from the corner of the barrier wall to the entrance of the dwelling place belonging to “Eliashib” who was the chief spiritual spokesman and leader.
When we think through Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how “Baruch” who was among seven hundred and sixty members of the family of “Zabbai” furiously rebuilt the barrier wall up to the entrance to the of the “chief priest”, “Eliashib's”, home. Section by section and piece by piece the barrier wall was being reconstructed. God's provision for Jerusalem was being fulfilled, and he was using people from all walks of life to rebuild it. God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us as well. He wants every person who will yield to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and resurrected from the dead three days later to put their faith and trust in Him, so they will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and employed to work in His Kingdom for all eternity.
Next time Nehemiah says, “after him repaired Mermoth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
