Disciples Terrified and Affrighted - Luke 24:37

Luke the beloved physician shared after Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples, they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples, “were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit” where we read:

But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

The verse reads, “But they were terrified and affrighted, ... Luke began with the words, “But they were terrified or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus' disciples were scared and frightened” “and affrighted” which means “and trembling, in fear and afraid”. Luke shared how the “disciples of Jesus” and their fellow companions were “scared and afraid”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and supposed that they had seen a spirit.” Luke continued with the words, “and supposed” which means “and thought, judged and determined” “that they had seen a spirit” or “they had observed, beheld and viewed attentively an essence which is devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting ”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples and those with them thought they “observed” an “apparition, ghost or spirit being”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “disciples of Jesus” and those with them responded to His greeting of “peace”. Rather than being “calm and tranquil”, they were “frightened and afraid”. Why can imagine why, but Jesus is the “Prince of Peace”, and all who receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins which keeps them separated from His Father God. Jesus came to die for the sins of mankind, and all who submit their lives to Him will enjoy “peace with God” and life everlasting in Heaven.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “Why are you troubled?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
