Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples who traveled with Him to Emmaus, and afterward they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked, “Have you here any meat?” where we read:
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them,
The verse reads, “And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and while they yet believed not” or “and during the time and moment Jesus' original eleven disciples and the people with them were untrusting and in disbelief” “for joy” which means “because, since and on account of gladness and delight”, “and wondered” or “and marvel and admiration”, “he said unto them” which means “Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked” the following question. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples and the people with them were still in “disbelief” as they looked upon Him, so He asked them the following question.
The verse continues, “... Have you here any meat?” Luke added the words, “have you here” which means “do you hold, own or possess in this place or location” “any meat” or “something eatable”? Luke shared how Jesus asked His disciples if they had something He could eat.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples and the people with them were slow to believe it was actually Him before them. We can imagine why they were in doubt because they knew He died, and they must have received reports of His body being buried. To have Jesus return from the dead would be … unbelievable. However, Jesus was with them, and He was willing to prove it by eating something with them. God wants all people to know His Son Jesus is alive, and Jesus paid the price for their sins so they could have a personal relationship with Him. Those who are wise will realize – Jesus is alive, and He is offering salvation to everyone who believes.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus' disciples gave Him, “a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
