John the apostle wrote how Jesus met a “Samaritan woman” at a well located in Sychar. As they conversed, the woman said, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and you say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-four of his book, John shared how Jesus told the woman, “God is a Spirit” where we read:
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
The verse reads, “God is a Spirit:” John began with the word, “God” or “the Godhead and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “is a spirit” which means “exists as a life giving essence which is devoid of all grosser matter and possesses the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”. John shared how Jesus declared “God”, His Father in Heaven, to exist as a “Divine essence who is all-knowing, all-powerful and everywhere present”.
The verse goes on to say, “and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”. John continued with the words, “and they” which means “and the people whether male or female” “that worship him” or “who give God adoration and homage” “must worship him” which means “need and are required to give adoration and homage to God” “in spirit” or “with that which is devoid of all grosser matter and possesses the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting” “and truth” which means “and according to reality, fact and certainty”. John shared how Jesus said the people who will “worship” God “are required” to give Him “homage and adoration” with all their “ essence which is devoid of all grosser matter and possesses the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting” with all “veracity, fact, reality and certainty”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn not only that “God” exists as a “Spirit”, but also anyone who desires to “give adoration to Him” needs to do so with all their “essence and being” and in a “truthful and real” way. In other words, a person must love and adore God with all their “heart, soul, mind and strength”, and they must be “real” when they are “worshiping” Him. God loves people, and He desires to give them abundant life both on earth and in Heaven, and when they humble themselves before Him and give Him honor and adoration, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with Him. Let all who read these words realize who “God” is and give Him honor and praise in a “spiritual manner” that is well-pleasing unto Him.
Next time John shares how the woman says to Jesus, “I know that Messiah comes which is called Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
