The apostle John wrote how Judas, “received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek you? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground”, and in chapter eighteen and verse seven of his book John shared how Jesus asked again, “Whom seek you? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.” where we read:
Then asked he them again, Whom seek you? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
The verse reads, “Then asked he them again, Whom seek you?” John began with the words, “then asked he them again” which means “at that time questioned and inquired Jesus of the crowd of soldiers, servants and officers another time”, “Whom seek you” or “who are you looking for”? John shared how Jesus repeated His question to the crowd of soldiers, servants and officers as to who they were looking for.
The verse continues, “And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.” John added the words, “and they said” or “and the crowd of soldiers, servants and officers uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Jesus of Nazareth” which means “Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation from the village of Nazareth which means one separated”. John shared how the group of soldiers, servants and officers repeated that they were looking for “Jesus of Nazareth”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus requestioned the hostile crowd as to whom they were looking for, and even though they “went aback and had fallen to the ground”, they continued in their pursuit of Him. Jesus knew these people were coming against Him because God's plan of “salvation” for the sins of mankind was unfolding. Jesus could have stopped this process at any time, yet because He loves people, He willingly yielded Himself to this crowd. Those who are wise will understand what Jesus did for the “salvation from sins” and eternal life with God and surrender to “Jesus of Nazareth” who alone is able to “save”.
Next time we see John shares how Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am he”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
