The apostle John wrote how Judas, “received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek you? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek you? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth”, and in chapter eighteen and verse eight of his book John shared how, “Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he” where we read:
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
The verse reads, “Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he:” John began with the words, “Jesus answered” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak saying”, “I have told you” or “I, Jesus, have spoken and declared to you, soldiers, servants and officers” “that I am he” which means “that I, Jesus, exist as Jesus of Nazareth”. John shared how Jesus repeated His answer that He was indeed “Jesus of Nazareth”.
The verse goes on to say, “if therefore you seek me, let these go their way:” John continued with the words, “if therefore you seek me” or “whether and in case wherefore, then, consequently and on this account you, soldiers, servants and officers are looking for, craving and demanding me, Jesus”, “let these go their way” which means “allow and permit these, Jesus' disciples, to leave and depart”. John shared how Jesus appealed to the hostile crowd who were looking for Him to allow His disciples to depart from them.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus again told the crowd He was “Jesus of Nazareth”, and He appealed to them to allow His disciples to go free. Jesus knew what was upon Him, and the time for His arrest, trial, torture and crucifixion was at hand. Jesus, in the midst of His arrest, attempted to save His disciples, and if they were allowed to leave, they would be preserved. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to go through this process to bring “salvation” to everyone who believes and trusts in Him. Let all who read these words know who Jesus is and surrender their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and receive the eternal protection that He provides.
Next time we see John shares, “that the saying might be fulfilled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
