Two Witnesses Lying Dead Revelation 11:8

As John the apostle continued to share about the “tribulation” that was to come upon the earth, he shared concerning the first six seals Jesus removed from the “scroll” in God's right hand wrote about “the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets”, and he told how “The first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth angels” blew their trumpets, and great judgment fell upon the earth. John continued, “there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceeds out of their mouth, and devours their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.” In chapter eleven and verse eight of Revelation John shared how “their dead bodies shall like in the street of the great city” where we read:

And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city,
which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

The verse reads, And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, ... John began with the words, “and their bodies” which means “the two witnesses physical bodies” “shall lie in” or “be positioned on and over” “the street” which means “the broad way, wide plat or open square” “of the great city” which refers to “pertaining to the highly esteemed and excellent town or abode of people”. John was told how the “two witnesses' dead bodies” will “lie” in the open “street” of the “great city” which is Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. John added the words, “which spiritually” which means “that divinely or figuratively” “is called” or “is named, identified, saluted and bid as” “Sodom” which means “burning” and refers to “a city destroyed by the Lord raining fire and brimstone upon it” “and Egypt” which means “double straits” and was “a country occupying the northeast angle of Africa”, “where also” or “at the place or spot” “our Lord” which refers to “our one to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “was crucified” or “was impaled upon a cross and extinguished”. John was told this “great city” was known “spiritually” as “Sodom and Egypt” and identified as the place where Jesus was “crucified” which was Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we may find it gross or strange that these “two witnesses'” bodies will be allowed to “lie in the streets”. Burials in Jerusalem usually take place within twenty-four hours, so this elongated time is unusual at best. Once again all these things are under God's control, and His prophesy through John the apostle should inspire us to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus because He knows all things. Those who are wise shall consider these “two witnesses” and submit themselves to God before all these things come to pass.

Next time John shares how the bodies of the two witnesses, the of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their bodies so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
