A Man with an Unclean Spirit - Mark 5:2

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes”, and in chapter five and verse two of his book, Mark shares how there, “met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,” where we read:

And when he was come out of the ship,

immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

The verse reads, “And when he was come out of the ship, ...” Mark began with the words, “and when he was come” or “and at the time and moment Jesus exited and arose” “out of the ship” or “away and separate from the boat or sailing vessel”. Mark shared the timing of when Jesus exited the boat in which He and His disciples were sailing.

The verse continues, “... immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.” Mark added the word, “immediately” which means “straightway and forthwith” “there met him” which means “there encountered Jesus as in a meeting” “out of the tombs” or “away and separated from the sepulchers, graves, memorials and monuments” “a man” which refers to “a male human being” “with an unclean spirit” or “who was possessed with, held and in bondage to an impure, morally lewd and foul simple essence that was devoid of all or at least all grosser matter and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”. Mark shared as soon as Jesus exited the boat, a man who was living among the sepulchers and graves and was “possessed” with an evil spirit “met” Him.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how this “possessed” man came out of the “tombs” toward Jesus as soon as He exited His boat. This man had an “unclean spirit”, and “immediately” he knew who Jesus was. It seems as though Jesus had not one minute of rest as wherever He went, some distraction or complication was before Him. Jesus would easily handle this man, and as we examine Jesus' power over “evil spirits”, let us be reminded, the is God's Son, the Messiah, the Christ and the “Savior” of the world.

Next time Mark shares how, “no man could bind him, no, not with chains”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
