Take Heed What You Hear - Mark 4:24

Mark wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-four of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said, “take heed what you hear” where we read:

And he said unto them, Take heed what you hear: with what measure you mete,

it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Take heed what you hear: with what measure you mete, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the disciples”, “Take heed” or “discern, perceive, understand and contemplate” “what you hear” which means “that which the disciples perceive, understand and comprehend”: “with what measure you mete” or “what kind of graduated staff, standard, judgment, determined extent and portion”. Mark shared how Jesus cautioned His disciples as to what they “hear” and with which they “make judgment”.

The verse goes on to say, “... it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.” Mark continued with the words, “it shall be measured” or “that which the disciples judge, determine and set as a standard will be judged, determined and set as a standard” “to you” which means “to the disciples”: “and unto you that hear” or “and to the people who perceive, understand and comprehend” “shall more be given” which means “will an increase and greater amount be granted, bestowed and added”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “disciples” would be “judged” according to what they understood, and when they obeyed what Jesus said, even “more” would be granted and bestowed” upon them.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “disciples” of Jesus were going to be “judged” according to that which they perceived from Jesus. When they followed through with His teaching and doctrine, they would be entrusted with more. God desires to have an intimate growing relationship with people, and when they submit themselves to His doctrine, not only shall they flourish in what they know, but they shall also receive an increase in what Jesus has to offer.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus declares, “for he that has, to him shall be given”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
