Friends Coming to Lay Hands on Jesus - Mark 3:21

Mark wrote how, “the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-one of his book, Mark shares when Jesus' “friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him” where we read:

And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.

The verse reads, “And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: Mark began with the words, “and when” or “at the time and moment” “his friends” or “those who were companions of Jesus” “heard of it” which means “were given the capacity to know, understand, discover and discern how the people thronged Him”, “they went out” or “Jesus' friends left and departed” “to lay hold on him” which means “t get possession of, obtain, take hold of and seize Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus' “friends” heard about the crowds surrounding Him and left to “seize” Him.

The verse goes on to say, “ for they said, He is beside himself.” Mark continued with the words “for they said” which means “because, since and on account that His friends uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “He is beside himself” which means “Jesus is displaced, out of His mind or insane”. Mark shared how Jesus' friends thought and declared that Jesus was “insane”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how people can believe they are correct in their assessments, and are totally off base. Jesus' friends heard how He had so many people around Him, so they decided to “capture” Him. They believed He was “crazy”, and they wanted to get Him away from the multitude. God loves everybody, and He desires to have a relationship with everyone. Rather than believe that Jesus is “insane” the best response is for a person to submit to Him and know Him as “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark shares how “the scribes” said about Jesus, “He has Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils cast he out devils”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
