A Sower Went Out to Sow - Mark 4:3

Mark wrote how Jesus, “began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine”, and in chapter four and verse three of his book, Mark shares how Jesus began a parable with the words, “there went out a sower to sow:” where we read:

Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:

The verse reads, “Hearken; Behold, ... Mark began with the word, “hearken” or “be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf, attentive and understanding”; “behold” which means “lo, look and see”. Mark shared how Jesus told the people who surrounded Him to “look and listen”.

The verse continues, “... there went out a sower to sow:” Mark added the words “there went out” which means “there departed and left” “a sower” or “one who scatters seed” “to sow” which means “to scatter seed”. Mark shared how Jesus said one who “sowed seed” went out to “scatter” seed.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see the beginning of Jesus' parable with the people around Him. Because He was in an agrarian society, Jesus employed the example of a “farmer” who went out to “sow seed”. Jesus will say more about this farmer and His “seed” in the next few verses, but suffice it for now to know that God has a plan of “Salvation” for sinful people who yield themselves to His Son Jesus. God wants everyone to be with Him in Heaven, and only those who “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus shall be allowed entrance.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
