How Can Satan Cast Out Satan? - Mark 3:23

Mark wrote how, “the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself. And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He has Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casts he out devils”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-three of his book, Mark shares how Jesus asked, “How can Satan cast out Satan?” where we read:

And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

The verse reads,And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, ... Mark began with the words, “and he called them” or “and Jesus invited and bid the scribes” “unto him” or “to Himself”, “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the scribes”, “in parables” which means “in an earthly story with a heaven meaning”. Mark shared how Jesus invited the “religious leaders” known as the “scribes” to come to Him, and He began to share with them in “earthly stories with heavenly meanings”.

The verse goes on to say, “... How can Satan cast out Satan?” Mark added the words “How can Satan” which means “in what way and manner is the prince of evil spirits and the inveterate adversary of God and Christ” “cast out Satan” or “drive and throw out the prince of evil spirits, the inveterate adversary of God and Christ”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned the “scribes” as to how “the prince of evil spirits” was able to throw out and dispel himself.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how the reasoning of the “scribes” was put in it's place when Jesus asked them how “Satan” was able to “cast himself” out. The whole idea would be contrary to their thinking. Jesus is the “Savior and Lord” of the world, and when a person submits their life to Him, they have aligned themselves with the One who has authority over “Satan, evil spirits and all who are contrary to God”.

Next time Mark shares what Jesus said, “if Satan rise up against himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
