Who is My Mother and Brothers? - Mark 3:33

Mark wrote how Jesus said, “All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost has never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Because they said, He has an unclean spirit.” Mark continued to write, “There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, your mother and your brethren without seek for you”, and in chapter three and verse thirty-three of his book, Mark shares how Jesus asked, “who is my mother, or my brethren?” where we read:

And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?

The verse reads, “And he answered them, saying, ... Mark began with the words, “and he answered them” or “and Jesus began to speak and responded by”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Mark shared how Jesus began to “answer” the statement presented to Him by the crowd concerning His family seeking Him.

The verse continues, “... Who is my mother, or my brethren?” Mark added the words “who is my mother” which means “what person is Jesus' mother”, “or my brethren” or “or what people are Jesus' brothers”? Mark shared how Jesus rhetorically asked the crowd surrounding Him who His “mother and brothers” were.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus turned the statement from the “multitude” toward a teaching moment among the people who surrounded Him. Jesus knew who His “earthly” family was, and for certain He knew His mother and brothers. However, Jesus desires a family just like His Father God. God sent His Son Jesus into the world so every person may be a part of His “Heavenly Family”, and entrance into His family is by “believing and trusting” in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words attend carefully to Jesus' answer to His own question and yield their lives to the One who is able to provide and “everlasting” family with God.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks, “who is my mother, or my brethren”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
