Binding the Strong Man - Mark 3:27

Mark wrote how, “the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself. And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He has Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casts he out devils. And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but has an end”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-seven of his book, Mark shares what Jesus said about, “binding the strong man” where we read:

No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods,

except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

The verse reads, “No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, ... Mark began with the words, “no man can enter” or “not any person whether male or female is capable and able to come in or make entrance” “into a strong man's house” or “in a person who is mighty, with strength of soul to sustain the attacks of Satan who exhibits many excellences”, “and spoil” which means “and seize asunder and plunder” “his goods” or “the strong man's household utensils, domestic gear, tackle and armament of vessels such as sails and ropes”. Mark shared how Jesus employed the example of the way no one is able to go into a “mighty man's house” to “plunder” his household utensils and domestic gear”.

The verse goes on to say, “... except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.” Mark continued with the word, “except” which refers to “in case and whatsoever” “he will first bind” or “the person who desires to plunder the strong man's house as a priority must beforehand fasten in chains and put under obligation” “the strong man” which means “the person who is mighty, with strength of soul to sustain the attacks of Satan who exhibits many excellences”; “and then” or “and afterward or at that time” “he will spoil” which means “the person who desires to spoil the strong man's house will seize asunder and plunder” “his house” or “the strong man's dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Mark shared how Jesus said it would be most important to first “restrict and contain” the “strong man” who owns his home and it's belonging.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus employed this example to demonstrate how He is more powerful than any “evil spirit” or “Satan” himself. Jesus is more powerful than any other entity, and in order to overcome any power an “evil spirit” exhibits, Jesus bound them and “cast them out”. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to defeat the power of “Satan” and bring people into a relationship with Himself. Those who yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” align themselves with the greatest power that exists, and they shall find that no “demon” or “devil” is too powerful for Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
