Let Us Pass Over to the Other Side - Mark 4:35

Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “the kingdom of God” is, “as if a man should cast seed into the ground. And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how. For the earth brings forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come. And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth. But when it is sown, it grows up, and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it. And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-five of his book, Mark shares how Jesus told His disciples, “let us pass over unto the other side” where we read:

And the same day, when the even was come, he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.

The verse reads, “And the same day, when the even was come, …” Mark began with the words, “and the same day” or “and the selfsame day as when Jesus told His parable and expounded all things to His disciples”, “when the even” which means “at the time and moment the later evening either from three to six o'clock or from six o'clock to the beginning of night” “was come” or “came to pass and happened”. Mark shared how the “evening time” came upon Jesus and His disciples after Jesus taught and explained His teachings to them.

The verse goes on to say, “... he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.” Mark continued with the words, “he said unto them” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “let us pass over” or “let Jesus and His disciples journey, go abroad and travel” “unto the other side” which means “to the opposite side of the sea”. Mark shared how Jesus said instructed His disciples to “go” to the opposite side of the sea.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was ready for His disciples to move along again. This time He instructed them to “go” to the other side of the “sea”. Jesus had a purpose and plan for His disciples and as He reveals this plan we shall see how He desired for them and us to know how God cares for His people, and even when the circumstances seem difficult or impossible, God's desire is to have a loving relationship with everyone through Jesus.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “let us pass over unto the other side”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
