If You have Ears – Hear - Mark 4:23

Mark wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-three of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said, “if any man have ears - hear” where we read:

If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

The verse reads, “If any man have ears to hear, ...” Mark began with the words, “if any man” or “whether any person male or female”, “have ears to hear” which means “has physical ears to perceive, understand and comprehend”. Mark shared how Jesus called upon any person who has “ears” to “perceive and understand” Him.

The verse continues, “... let him hear.Mark added the words, “let him” or “allow and permit that person whether male or female to” “hear” which means “be given the faculty for hearing, perceiving, understanding and comprehending”. Mark shared how Jesus charged the person who has “capacity” to “hear” to do so.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, the implication is that people could have the “capacity” for hearing the principles of the Kingdom of God, however they do not perceive and understand them. God wants all people to “hear” His Son, and when Jesus says something, the best response is to “understand” Him and be obedient to what He says. May all who read these words yield their lives to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” and take heed to His “words”.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “take heed what you hear”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
