The Wind and the Sea Obey Him - Mark 4:41

Mark wrote, “the same day, when the even was come, he said unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care you not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are you so fearful? how is it that you have no faith?”, and in chapter four and verse forty-one of his book, Mark shares how Jesus' disciples said, “even the wind and the sea obey him” where we read:

And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another,

What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

The verse reads, “And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, ...” Mark began with the words, “and they feared exceedingly” or “and Jesus' disciples were afraid and seized with alarm with great dread and terror”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “one to another” or “one disciple to another disciple”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples responded to Jesus wondering why they were so “fearful” by being even more “afraid” and filled with terror as they said the following to one another.

The verse continues, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him” Mark added the words, “what manner of man” which means “what kind of person” “is this” or “is this person Jesus”, “that even the wind” which means “so even and indeed the violent agitation and stream of air or the very strong tempestuous wind” “and the sea” or “and the waves of the sea” “obey him” which means “listen to and hearken unto Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples wondered what kind of person Jesus actually was because the “tempestuous winds” and “raging seas” submit to Him.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples were greatly amazed at Jesus' ability. The elements of the world were under His control, and when Jesus' disciples were challenged by Him, they became even more afraid of His presence. God Almighty rules and reigns over the universe, and He desires to have a relationship with every person who will believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. By yielding to Him, a person aligns themselves with the greatest of all, and “winds, waves” and any other troubles and difficulties shall all submit to Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus and His disciples, “came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
