Seed Springing and Growing Up - Mark 4:27

Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Take heed what you hear: with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that has, to him shall be given: and he that has not, from him shall be taken even that which he has. And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-seven of his book, Mark shares how Jesus said, “the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how” where we read:

And should sleep, and rise night and day,

and the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how.

The verse reads, “And should sleep, and rise night and day, ...” Mark began with the words, “and should sleep” or “and the man who cast the seed would drop off to sleep normally”, “and rise night and day” which means “and be aroused and awaken both in the nighttime and the daytime”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to the man who sows his seed into the ground and day after day goes to sleep and wakes up.

The verse continues, “... and the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how.” Mark added the words, “and the seed” or “and the planted seed for bearing fruit” “should spring” which means “sprouts, buds and produces leaves” “and grow up” or “and increases, enlarges and lengthens”, “he knows not how” which means “the man who sowed the seed doesn't perceive, understand, notice or discern the way or reason this happens”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “seed” that is planted “sprouts” and “grows” without the knowledge of the man who planted it.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how “seed” that is “sown” into the ground “sprouts” and “grows” even though the person planting it has no idea how this happens. God set forth the order of “seedtime” and “harvest”, and although many advances in the knowledge of how a plant grows has been learned, there is still the “God” factor that makes it all come together. God is at work in His Kingdom, and He draws people into a relationship with His Son Jesus so they might live with Him forever. Since they are separated from God by their sin, God sent Jesus to pay the penalty of “death on the cross” for the sins of all mankind. The “seed” has been planted, and now it rests upon the hearts and minds of men. They respond best when they yield themselves to His process of “sprouting and growing” in their relationship with God.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus declares, “the earth brings forth fruit of herself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
